Emergency Relief Donation for flash floods in northern India

Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) has opened an account for emergency relief donations to support survivors of the flash floods in the northern Indian state of Uttarkhand. The account will be active from June 24 until at least September 24. The donated funds will go towards rescue and relief operations. The JRCS has also sent two staff member to India by June 24 to assess further needs.

From June 14, heavy monsoon rains have been battering many areas of North India, with Uttarkhand worst hit. Due to extensive damage done to by rain, even a week after the devastating floods and landslides, there is still no clarity on the number of people missing or dead, although the state chief minister said that the number of lives lost is expected to pass 1,000 and 22,000 people are still remain unaccounted for.
In order to evaluate and assess the needs, the Indian Red Cross Society and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) have sent assessment teams to the disaster area in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun district. At the same time, Indian Red Cross has started medical relief activities and at least 200 volunteers have gathered to help the victims to lost loved ones through the “family Links” programme and also by giving first aid to 125 people in one day. The IFRC has so far sent 50 million yen to support Indian Red Cross and thousands of blankets, mosquito nets, towels and other relief items have been distributed to survivors.
