Japanese Red Cross Readies as Super Typhoon nears Okinawa
According to Japan’s Meteorological Agency, typhoon number 8 (English name: Neoguri) is predicted to hit Okinawa around noon tomorrow local time Tuesday July 8 . As of 18:00 on Monday, JMA announced an alert for Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture, predicting possible severe damage, depending on the continued course of the storm system.
Typhoon Neoguri is reported to be one of the strongest systems threatening this part of Japan for several years.
In preparation for the storm, Okinawa Chapter of Japanese Red Cross has loaded 500 blankets and 240 emergency relief kits (including a portable radio, flashlight, towels as well as health information) into trucks for rapid distribution. In addition, Okinawa chapter made warning calls to 70 elderly who visits Naha City Aja Red Cross Welfare Complex, who need special attention. This facility serves a total of 145 elderly people, with 100 residents of the nursing home, 5 short stay residents and 40 people attending the day care service centre.
